Does Adding Urine Heat Up Your Compost Pile? (video)

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbHCqFIXLYk A few weeks ago, I saw the above video and decided to make my own mock experiment after watching.  I mean, adding urine to compost can't be that shocking, can it?  It makes sense in the grand scheme of things...so isn't it just hype?  Maybe it's good for the mineral content and nitrogen levels, but does it work as an activator as I keep reading in various places?  My thoughts point to no. Take a look at the results: httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdqXH_0ohlw

Does Adding Urine Heat Up Your Compost Pile?

Over the last week, I started experimenting with new items in the compost tumbler. I saw a video a few months back about adding urine to compost...it's high in nitrogen and water, which your compost wants.  Right?  Normally, when you add a bunch of food material all once, the pile gets super hot for a few days before chilling out a bit.  Is this the same with adding urine?  Let's find out. I had my compost tumbler about a quarter full with new material for about two weeks.  I took the temperature at the start of the experiment: 70 degrees.  Every day I take the temperature of the compost at 530pm. I then added a pepsi bottle full of urine (only at beginning of the experiment). The results were as…

Composting urine…what do you think?

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbHCqFIXLYk It's pretty simple... urine is high in nitrogen.  When applied properly, you're helping the C:N ratio quite heavily.  Have you ever created a compost pile and your end result had huge gobs of what was once food (mostly nitrogen)?  This is a handy way to add heaps of nitrogen without having annoying clumps in the finished product. While I've never really thought specifically about composting urine, I love peeing outside as much as possible.  So technically I'm already contributing, I guess.  I highly doubt it will take long for me to fill up a few gallon jugs, so it's time to find out.  By the time I have these ready, it should be time to start building a new compost pile.  Keep in mind that they will build up…
