For the last several months, I decided to fill it up and not empty it since it's colder out (less bugs) and it won't smell as bad. I opened it up today, and it was nothing but sludge in the bottom and gobs of compost mites around the lid. These are a common inhabitant of worm bins, but they don't really pose a threat to your system. In fact, they're a bit of a help since they indicate that your compost is unbalanced. Most likely your compost is too moist, and that's what these critters like being around. The solution? Add a bunch of dry browns to balance it out. The…

Charlotte Airport to Open Recycling Center with Composting System

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pN_i5aewudk I love this dude! I'm lousy at any form of gardening/cooking and watching his videos gives good tips and perspective. I'm glad he made a video just for this announcement...it's a good one that we shall see more of in the future, I'm sure. Think about ideal candidates for sorting waste...airports should be up there on your list. It's already so restrictive as it is, that with some adjusting to the food establishments you could easily control your waste stream even more to prevent any contamination. It appears that they're looking at a 5 year ROI which isn't bad at all, and it's one heck of a message to the others out there. Compost Window at Tyler School of Art

I was sifting through a few months' worth of pictures on the camera, and I found this gem: Can you tell what it is? It's a sideview of an indoor compost pile in action. Pretty cool! I spent some time at Tyler School of Art's "Coffree Mondays" hosted by Robert Blackson a few months ago, and it was a great vibe. I was asked to hang out and talk about waste and environmental issues. I thought there would be people to speak to, but the majority just wanted to get their free coffee and get the heck out of there.
