Recycle or Donate Your Halloween Candy

It's been a few days since Halloween, and you have way too much candy sitting around...what should you do with it? Sending it to me is a good option, but the popular response is to send it overseas to the troops, but if you don't feel like getting them sick with your leftover candy corn and tootsie rolls, my suggestion is obviously to compost it. Candy is great and all, but ultimately isn't it just waste? I think I'm just cranky because I got back from the dentist today and she told me candy and soda aren't food groups...damn!

Can You Compost Hemp Shoes?

Awhile ago I contacted IPath to see if my hemp shoes are compostable. I kinda forgot about it, and they didn't return my call...that's okay. Being a shoe company with a hippie aesthetic, I figured this inquiry wouldn't be out of the question...however I probably sounded like a heckler. These shoes are insanely comfortable, but of course they aren't as durable as other materials. The plan, as you may remember, was to cut the hemp upper off of the rubber sole, grind it up and compost it. I called earlier this week, and I got into a lengthy chat with the dude. He said he spoke with the manufacturer, and they advised against composting them. I was right - the dyes in the shoe contain something sketchy. It's all how…

My Basil is Still Growing…yes!

A few weeks ago, I decided to harvest all of my basil plants from the Clash of the Composts! experiment. They were all looking so good for so long...those big bright and shiny green leaves. At a certain point, they outgrew their pots it seemed, and started to look worse. I moved two out of each of the pots in the experiment to free up space, and put them all together in another container. It definitely improved the growth of the experiment pots, but only for a short time. The ones in the new slender container were looking even better. Anyway, I chopped everything off to make a pesto and didn't expect anything to happen in the pots after that. It's been a few weeks, let's see how they look:…
