“Can I Compost This?” Series #5: Hair

Can I compost hair?  Cat hair?  Dog hair?  My hair? Yes, of course. However, the same rule applies to hair as most things... add in moderation, and the smaller the pieces, the better.  Hair takes quite some time to break down, but is absolutely compost-worthy. In fact, between 6 and 7 pounds of hair contain as much nitrogen as 100-200 lbs of manure, according to the Rodale Book of Composting. Hair is one of those items that likes to clump up...think leaves.  Give your pile plenty of air and as much rotation/turning as you can to speed up decay. Greening the Mini Golf Course

While I was looking around to see if anyone had ever written about waste at a mini golf course, I found an article that I was really hoping existed: Greening the Golf Course Greens .  Such a no-brainer:  You're cutting tons of grass and shrubs all the time, you want some pretty flowers here and there, and do you really need fluorescent green grass? I haven't played golf in years.  I used to play occasionally but I preferred the Par 3's or even better, mini golf.  I always found putting to be the most fun part, and when I went to Myrtle Beach recently, little did I know it was the mini golf capital of...the U.S.?  The world?  Either way, I was psyched. Clothing You Can Compost? (article)

I have a pair of really messed up hemp shoes...it's getting to the point where I'm considering cutting the sole off and shredding the hemp upper to see if I can compost it. I contacted the company to see what dyes were used in making the shoe.  Super friendly customer service, but no response as promised.  Sadly, I think I freaked them out with what would be considered a not-so-average question.  I'm going to try calling again, and if no response, I'll just call again.  I bought hemp shoes because they're more sustainably grown and way more comfy to boot...they just don't last as long.
