Acclimation Anxiety

Hey there crazy composters, I wanted to share a recent experience I had with the ol' red wigglers that seems to happen quite often...the initial freakout phase. I'm noticing it seems rather common that the first few days of having a new worm bin results in worms trying to escape and run all over the place...why is this happening?  Chances are, it's due to the main variables: Container (and oxygen), proper food, bedding. One thing to remember, is when you receive a shipment of worms, they just spent a few days in a tiny box...so chances are that's why they seem a little weird at first.  They either appear dead, or hyperactive.  I still remember when I got my last pound of worms...I put them in their new home, which…

Envirocycle comes through again!

As the months got colder, my material was degrading at a slower rate and I continued to add to it as normal. The instructions mention not filling it beyond 3/4ths of the way, and they weren't kidding. When January rolled around, it was about full and my material was rather frozen when I decided to try tumbling it. The result: The latch bent out of shape. Whoops! That was my lone complaint about the product: lack of non-plastic parts. A metal door hinge and a metal latch would both make the product even better. Link: Pile it On: 20 Trash Types You Can Actually Compost Looking for more stuff to compost?  This article is definitely worth checking out.  Some of the items may raise an eyebrow, and I'm currently in the middle of testing a good portion of them.  In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if some hardcore composters were annoyed by some of the stuff on this list. In the next week or so, I'll be posting a more thorough examination of the article.  I'm currently on a road trip and "taking a break".  Don't think I'm not taking pictures of waste receptacles and looking for businesses with composting options...so far, not so much worth writing about, unfortunately.
