Can I compost hair? Cat hair? Dog hair? My hair?
Yes, of course.
However, the same rule applies to hair as most things… add in moderation, and the smaller the pieces, the better. Hair takes quite some time to break down, but is absolutely compost-worthy.
In fact, between 6 and 7 pounds of hair contain as much nitrogen as 100-200 lbs of manure, according to the Rodale Book of Composting.
Hair is one of those items that likes to clump up…think leaves. Give your pile plenty of air and as much rotation/turning as you can to speed up decay.
