Do You Think Starbucks is Sustainable?

When you're out on the road, sometimes you have to settle for crappy coffee.  Avoiding gas station coffee is of utmost importance, but that often leaves you with Starbucks.  I always leave Starbucks thinking the same thing: They like to market themselves as sustainable, but are missing out on quite an opportunity. As a trash dude, I'm always looking at waste streams and how an establishment is designed to handle them.  Starbucks (and any coffee shop for that matter) has a severely simple one.  On the back end, there's coffee grinds and cardboard.  I saw that Starbucks has had the Grounds for Your Garden campaign since 1995...none of the employees had any idea what this was.  Smart for Starbucks though, as it saves them on waste hauling fees and greens…

Time to compost?

I think so. That's when you know you're a compostaholic, as they say... I'm always stoked to find food I forgot about in the fridge.  Even though this was enough for two rice cooker dinners, so that sucks!

Acclimation Anxiety

Hey there crazy composters, I wanted to share a recent experience I had with the ol' red wigglers that seems to happen quite often...the initial freakout phase. I'm noticing it seems rather common that the first few days of having a new worm bin results in worms trying to escape and run all over the place...why is this happening?  Chances are, it's due to the main variables: Container (and oxygen), proper food, bedding. One thing to remember, is when you receive a shipment of worms, they just spent a few days in a tiny box...so chances are that's why they seem a little weird at first.  They either appear dead, or hyperactive.  I still remember when I got my last pound of worms...I put them in their new home, which…
