In just ten minutes, I took care of a week's worth of toilet waste and food scraps. -Dig an indentation from the center of the pile. -Dump in food scraps followed by compost toilet contents. -Rinse out both containers and dump water into center of pile. -Cover the pile with leaves and dampen. Done!

I'm a little lost on the pro- garbage disposal talk, though. I've seen only a few write-ups on this, and they've all been from Insinkerator... conflict of interest, perhaps? Convert organic materials into compost in your own yard, or flush them down the drain to combine with nasty chemicals, heavy metals, motor oil, medication, and everything else that washes into the sewers. Even with an infrastructure set up to compost sewage sludge (which isn't always the case- it's often incinerated!), the end product contains a lot of crap. Keep your organic materials at home. Do Compost Piles Need to be Watered?

I just got back from a two week trip, and the first thing I thought about was 'how are my compost systems doing?' It ends up that things are pretty good. It hasn't rained here much, so I added water to my compost bins. This is a new behavior for me- it's normally stated as unnecessary to water compost systems, but I think this mostly applies to poorly designed compost systems that don't have adequate aeration, therefore becoming that damp and smelly nightmare we've heard of but probably haven't experienced. My new trash can composting system (seen below) was looking pretty dried out. The key reason: air holes. This isn't a big deal, and I'd rather have this situation than a soggy mess (not that that can't be cured quickly…
