Composting urine…what do you think?

It’s pretty simple… urine is high in nitrogen.  When applied properly, you’re helping the C:N ratio quite heavily.  Have you ever created a compost pile and your end result had huge gobs of what was once food (mostly nitrogen)?  This is a handy way to add heaps of nitrogen without having annoying clumps in the finished product.

While I’ve never really thought specifically about composting urine, I love peeing outside as much as possible.  So technically I’m already contributing, I guess.  I highly doubt it will take long for me to fill up a few gallon jugs, so it’s time to find out.  By the time I have these ready, it should be time to start building a new compost pile.  Keep in mind that they will build up some pressure, so be sure to open them periodically so you don’t spray yourself later.

As I said before, since I don’t garden, I’m not going to bother with trying urine on the plants…my hunch would be that you would kill them off pretty quickly, unless you dilute it.  If you want to learn more about urine and gardening, there are some discussions surrounding it found HERE and HERE.

With water companies increasing their rates, why not take out a significant portion and have some fun?
