Made a new pile- Finally!

I finally got around to doing some guerilla gardening in the neighborhood to empty out my finished compost- I had nearly a cubic yard of the stuff left over!

The Geobin compost bin is not the prettiest looking thing you can buy, but it gets the job done every time with ease- I’ve had mine going for over 8 years now 🙂

To start this pile, all I did was add two full garbage bags of leaves, followed by a week’s worth of food scraps and some extra stuff that went bad in the fridge.

I soaked down the pile, then added another couple inches’ worth of leaves on top and got that wet, too.

A week later, and this thing is cooking at a temperature of 142 degrees!

It’s that easy.

The worms didn’t die either- they simply moved to the outer edges of the pile until the initial cooking is done.

I LOVE using this system- when you’re working with a bin this size, it makes it really hard to screw up.

Add your food scraps to the center, cover them each week with leaves/straw/dead plants. If it doesn’t rain, water it weekly.

That’s it!
