my trash can composter – untouched since July 2019

I totally forgot about this trash can composter- I filled it to the brim by the end of June 2019.

I switched over to a Geobin compost bin since then, and it’s still not full- if you can swing a compost bin in your yard, it makes composting super easy.

Although I didn’t feel like emptying it today, I felt like checking it out.

The bin has plenty of holes, even in the lid- I do this so that rain can get in there to keep the contents a bit wet.

I kept the lid off of it whenever it would rain just so it could get a little boost- compost piles crave moisture.

Leaving it alone for over eight months is a good amount of time to let it break down- I also added red wiggler worms in there to break it down even better.

If you can swing getting some red wigglers, they will definitely help you out.

In the colder months, they just burrow inward and downward… when it warms up, your compost has a big spaghetti pile in the middle- it’s the best!

My prediction is that I’ll have a good amount of finished compost, but there will also be a bit of unfinished material as well.

When your compost bin is only this size, it makes it much more difficult to achieve productive hot temperatures (above 121 F)… this isn’t a cold composter, but it’s close.

In other words, the longer you can let this sit, the better your results will be.

With a two trash can system, if you can get on a 6 month alternating cycle, that seems to be the sweet spot.

It’s supposed to thunderstorm- one last soaking before I screen this out.

Stay tuned!
