Always Add Food Scraps to the Center.

As the rain and colder temperatures come into play, it becomes more important to fluff up your compost pile with cover materials. This pile is still mostly leaves with all my food scraps cooking away in the middle- remember to always add your food scraps to the center! Compost piles crave moisture- the pile will be extra toasty in the morning from all the rain today... I added another couple inches of leaves on top to bulk it up some more.

Is Mold in the Kitchen Composter a Problem?

Where did this mold in the kitchen composter come from? When the food scrap collector gets overly full and isn't emptied enough, mold may start to form. I got lazy and let this one go for over two weeks (empty it weekly!), and there you have it... full of fuzz and the bottom of the container is a bit warm too. It's no problem for your compost pile though- all the microorganisms in there will make quick work of it.
